Athletic Mentor Program

The West Virginia University Athletic Mentor Program is an initiative in which leaders from the community are brought in by WVU Athletics to serve as role models for current student-athletes. The mentor program provides Mountaineer student-athletes with valuable assets they can use in everyday life including time management, social skills and organizational skills. These talents paired with their degree, can help improve their quality of life once they leave West Virginia University.
The WVU Athletic Mentor Program has three goals:
1. Maximize student-athletes’ academic, personal and social growth within the NCAA, BIG EAST and West Virginia University.
2. Support the student-athletes as they pursue their academic goals leading towards graduation
3. Improve the student-athletes’ post-college quality of life.
Roles of a Mentor:
1. Assist student-athletes in developing organizational and time management skills to enable them to complete course work on time.
2. Develop professional relationships with the student-athletes.
3. Evoke student-athletes’ ideas, rather than providing their own.
4. Maintain ethical integrity in accordance with the rules of the NCAA, BIG EAST, WVU and the WVU Athletic Department.
5. Provide reports to the academic support staff in order to monitor the progress of the student-athletes
throughout their career at WVU.
6. Assist student-athletes with keeping an academic planner.
7. Encourage student-athletes and be patient with them.
